EyePlayer

Android 0.1.5 · Windows and Linux 0.1.5

The Windows and Linux app is out now. The Android app is in early access and a Google Play listing is coming. An iPhone version is on the roadmap after that, and that timing may still change.

On the PC, the free version plays folders on this computer and shows a small ad strip, with no account needed. Premium adds network sources, the equaliser, ReplayGain and tag editing, and removes the ads. Signing in is only for a trial or for Premium. Later PC builds arrive by themselves: the app checks on startup, shows a strip across the top when one is ready, and Update now installs it and restarts. You never need to come back here.

On Android, the free version plays folders on the phone and shows a small ad strip, with no account needed. Signing in is only for a trial or for Premium. The Android build checks for updates too, but installs them through your browser rather than silently, because a sideloaded app is not allowed to install another one on its own.

Android

Android 8.0 or newer · 4.9 MB · APK

The phone player, with the rotary touch wheel. The free version plays music already on the phone and shows an ad strip. Premium adds network sources, the equaliser, ReplayGain, offline downloads and USB sync.

Installing an app from outside the Play Store takes three confirmations, and the wording is alarming even though nothing is wrong. Your browser asks whether to keep the file. Android then asks for permission to install apps from your browser, which is a switch you flip once. Finally Play Protect says it has not seen this app before: the button you want is behind More details, and it reads Install anyway. All three are what Android shows for any app that is not on the store yet.

When you first open EyePlayer it asks to read the music on your phone. Say yes, or the library stays empty.

Windows

Windows 10 / 11 · 64-bit · installer

Installs for your user account only. No administrator password, no UAC prompt. The Java runtime is bundled, so there's nothing else to install.

Download for Windows (installer)

Run the installer and follow it through; you get a Start-menu and desktop shortcut, and an entry in Apps & features to remove it again. The build isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn about an unrecognised app. Choose More info → Run anyway.

Linux

64-bit · installer script

Installs into your home folder only. No sudo, no package manager, nothing added to the system. The Java runtime is bundled, so it works on any modern 64-bit distribution.

Download for Linux (installer)

Run it with sh EyePlayer-Linux-x64-installer.sh. EyePlayer then appears in your applications menu. To remove it later, run ~/.local/share/EyePlayer/uninstall.sh. Your library and settings are left alone.

Checking what you downloaded is really what we built (optional): the SHA-256 of the Android APK is 5e22feaf6b8495ba8e8f96eb09ad0e6fc1f7b1372d2ca29503588d1ca0f5dd42, the SHA-256 of the Windows installer is 8b39bc34f0dea4969c9e09ab46f1d775ea25183b25f73cbdc4d2023e3cc0bc9f and of the Linux installer b2fc8bb72d542dc7ad2ee16510d905e700b4131f9a283fb8853ca4f693deca2a. Every update the app installs later checks its own signed checksum automatically.

First run

  1. Open the app. It starts in the free version straight away.
  2. Add your music: Add library folder for folders on this PC, or Servers for a NAS, a web folder (WebDAV), a public Google Drive folder, or an HTTP share.
  3. Let it scan, and play.
